Indiana Substitute Teaching Requirements
To become a substitute teacher in Indiana the requirements must be met:
•Indiana Fingerprint Clearance Card
•Obtain official college transcript
•Letters of Recommendation
•Create a License Verification and Information System (LVIS) account online
•Complete application

Get Your Indiana Fingerprint Clearance Card
The first step to becoming a substitute teacher in Indiana is to get your Indiana Fingerprint Clearance Card. The reason it is the first step is because it often will take several weeks to get the documentation for it and you cannot complete an application til all requirements are met. Fingerprint clearance cards can often be done at local police stations. If you have trouble finding somewhere to get a fingerprint clearance card, contact the district you will be applying for. Some districts do not require a fingerprint clearance card, but it is highly recommended to get one before searching for a substitute teaching job.

Obtain Official College Transcripts

You will need an official copy of your college transcripts verifying that you have received a Bachelor’s degree to receive your substitute certification. Submit Official College Transcripts at the same time you turn in your substitute teacher application. Your official transcript will not be returned and copies of your transcript are not accepted.

Letters of Recommendation
It is recommended that you get professional references to write a letter of recommendation for you. An applicant tends to need 2-3 letters of recommendation because a majority of school districts in Indiana require that many. Some of these recommendations can be electronically submitted.

License Verification and Information System Account Online
In order to submit an application to be a substitute teacher in Indiana you will need to create an account on the Indiana Department of Education’s online License Verification and Information System. This may take 15-20 minutes but it is required to apply.

Complete Your Application
Once you have decided as to which school you would like to substitute teach for you must submit your application through the Indiana Department of Education’s online License Verification and Information System (LVIS). Go to their website and follows the steps to apply. WIth applying you will have to pay about a $15 dollar fee. This Licensing fee can be paid online.

The daily rates of a substitute teacher in Indiana will obviously change with your qualifications and different districts, but here is a general idea.
•Substitutes with a bachelors degree and or license is about $90.00 per day
